The leadership study
Is this name actually a leader — outperforming its market while the pullback happens? A stock falling with the tape is just correlated; a leader retracing while its relative strength holds is being repriced, not abandoned. Leadership is the filter that separates a pullback worth studying from ordinary weakness.
The trend study
Is the larger structure intact? The study grades the trend across horizons — moving-average order, higher-timeframe direction, how deep the retrace has cut relative to the leg that preceded it. A pullback that has broken its own trend isn't a pullback anymore; it's a downtrend with good branding.
The level study
Is price arriving at real structure? The study maps where the retrace is landing — rising moving averages, prior breakout zones, retracement levels — and grades how much structure stacks up at the same price. A pullback into nothing is a guess. A pullback into layered structure is a location.

Why pullback-to-structure beats chasing
It isn't that buying breakouts never works. It's that buying a retrace into structure gives you two things a chase never can:
- A defined invalidation. When you enter at structure, the level itself tells you where the idea is wrong. If the cluster of support gives way, the study failed and you know it immediately — at a small, pre-measured distance. When you chase a high, the honest answer to "where are you wrong?" is usually "somewhere much lower."
